Objective: Ever go to a craft store for one cross stitch pattern and come out with several items you probably don’t need; then you get home and realize you’re missing that one key item you went there for specifically.
Seems like these days you can’t go to a craft store and buy just one thing for your cross stitch without forgetting the main item you went in there for! (at least that’s my problem)

Great way to decorate your home and pass the time!
Around 24 million Americans participated in a needlecraft in 2016. And another study shows
that more than 80 million people engage with Augmented Reality on a monthly basis.
Why don’t we somehow combine those
two for a fun experience for all!

What my user looks like
So how do I get cross stitchers more involved
in the problem-solving process?
I came up with 3 pretty powerful ideas to work with.
Have an app that has a friendly helper to assist you through the troubled areas.
This friendly helper can show you what your piece will look like in its finished state.
Take a quiz to receive a customized pattern every month.
I started off with a round of testing with my medium-fi
mockups to see how the users would react to the app.
There were 3 usability issues from my testing
The Augmented Reality needs to be more clear when trying to align the screen
with the object for the “try on” feature. The ‘Explore’ page needs reworking so the tabs make sense for users.
Add a call to action button when you are trying out the frames for your cross stitch.

What did I learn from all of this?
I hit the limits of Figma when I wanted to add a video to my prototype. The sense of motion and image recognition was really important to develop in my prototype, so I went beyond Figma and learned how to create a short clip in After Effects.
Augmented Reality is the future. I’m happy I got to think of great ideas that incorporated this fun way of learning into my design.
Being that person who goes to the craft store and forgets the main item I went there for really gave me great insights and some empathy on how to design this app to its fullest potential.
I am very happy with the end results, and especially with something I could see myself using in the future!
All stitched up! (For now at least)
It would be great to see this developed one day so I can help
get more cross stitchers involved and stitching beautiful patterns!
